Number 308

BRANDING | ART DIRECTION

No. 308 is not just a bar in Nashville, Tennessee.

Project Brief

No. 308 represent the character, charm, and attitude of the Music City. They make classic drinks, and have a few new ones up their sleeves. They also make their own house sodas. They have a small food menu all made with locally sourced ingredients, and they’re proud of that.

This project was a collaboration with Matthew Shoewalter, who handled all copywriting. This rebrand includes a new logo, paper system, packaging and advertising.

1. Branding & Identity

This rebrand utilizes a variety of font styles, using the serif-stencil Dala Floda Bold as the primary font, fitting the rustic-contemporary themes seen in the bar. Kestrel Script speaks to the casual and fun nature of the bar. Nevis Bold and Times are used for text purposes.
I created Nevis Distressed by hand-altering the glyphs of Nevis individually, giving the letterforms rounder shapes and some wear and tear. Kestrel Script can also be used for display purposes.

308’s primary color is gold. Although typically seen on top of the charcoal black or white, it works well layered on any of the other colors. Each color is paired with a dark tone for special cases, as seen on the coasters and soda labels.
Roughened lines and stars are reoccuring elements featured in this rebrand, as they speak to the voice of the brand and help organize information.

2. Paper System

Four different business cards are available to the employees of No. 308. Ideally, black and white cards would be reserved for managers, and red and blue cards for staff members.

The letterhead was created by following the Van de Graff canon of proportions in order to create a pleasing and well-balanced layout.

3. Print Collateral

A bar is not complete without a unique drink menu. The four-fold menu allows the food and drinks to be organized onto individual panels, and not take up as much space on the countertop as a traditional menu.

The coasters share a little bit about how some of No. 308’s signature drinks are made and suggest to visitors what they should order next.

4. Packaging

The bar crafts their own sodas to mix with their drinks, but who says you can’t just enjoy a good soda? I created labels for the 5 sodas they make: cola, citrus, seltzer, tonic, and ginger.

The names of the sodas reflect the literature theme the bar uses in naming some of their signature drinks. Each drink can be differentiated through color and the soda descriptions.

5. Advertising

The print ads are perfect for Nashville lifestyle or dining magazines. The ads play up the bar’s name and use thirsty imagery to entice the reader into coming in, having a drink, and hearing the real story.
